Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to question particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
